Echoes from Portland’s Underground
🎸 A Graphic from the Loud Side of Portland
The Satyricon PPortland Dive Bar Shirt recalls the city’s underground music history through jagged logo lettering and the venue’s defiant slogan, “Great Music, Bad Neighborhood.” The design also displays 125 N.W. Sixth Ave., grounding the graphic in Satyricon’s former Old Town location. Its distressed composition captures the unpolished energy associated with the legendary Portland rock club.
🔊 Inside Portland’s Punk-Rock Landmark
Satyricon opened at 125 N.W. Sixth Avenue in Portland’s Old Town in March 1984, founded by George Touhouliotis after he acquired the former Marlena’s Tavern. Named after Federico Fellini’s 1969 film, the club became a vital stage for punk, alternative, indie, and experimental performers. Its bills welcomed both local musicians and touring acts, helping connect Portland’s developing underground scene with the wider Pacific Northwest circuit. Bands associated with the venue included Dead Moon, Poison Idea, Everclear, and numerous artists who later reached larger audiences. More than a conventional nightclub, Satyricon also fostered poetry, theater, visual art, and the social community surrounding independent music. The original run ended in 2003, followed by an all-ages revival from 2006 until the final closure on November 1, 2010. The building was demolished in 2011, but the venue’s legacy was preserved through performance archives and the 2013 documentary Satyricon: Madness and Glory.
🤘 Worn for the Music and the Memory
The Satyricon Portland Shirt belongs at record fairs, punk shows, neighborhood bars, rehearsal rooms, and relaxed nights around the city. It speaks to Portland music veterans, underground-rock listeners, venue-history collectors, and anyone drawn to spaces where emerging bands, eccentric artists, and devoted audiences once built a community beyond the mainstream.
