1993 Grateful Dead Jack In The Box Tie-Dye shirt is linked to the April Fool’s Day show at Nassau Coliseum in Uniondale, New York, part of the Grateful Dead’s Spring Tour 1993.
Continuing the tradition of playful Grateful Dead April Fool’s Day events, the band had a special surprise for the Deadheads. During this event, the band orchestrated a prank by having their bassist, Phil Lesh, appear on stage dressed as Barney, the purple dinosaur from the children’s TV show “Barney & Friends.” This prank took place during the performance of “Iko Iko” amusing and surprising the audience as they watched “Barney” play bass on stage. Despite the fun highlight of Barney’s appearance, this show wasn’t highly regarded by many Deadheads in terms of overall performance quality.
In addition to this event, Grateful Dead has a long history of fun and playful April Fool’s Day performances. Here are two other notable events:
- April 1, 1980, at Capitol Theatre: During this performance, Grateful Dead executed a famous prank where the band members swapped instruments. Bob Weir played keyboard, Brent Mydland and Jerry Garcia played drums, Bill Kreutzmann played bass, Mickey Hart played guitar and sang, and Phil Lesh played lead guitar. After this humorous performance, they returned to their usual instruments and played “Promised Land” again.
- April 1, 1986, at Hartford Civic Center: In this show, Grateful Dead began with a fake technical difficulty tape, making the audience believe the sound system was broken. Then, they suddenly appeared and started playing music, creating a surprising and enjoyable moment for the audience.
The “Grateful Dead Jack In The Box Tie-Dye” shirt encapsulates these memorable moments. The vibrant tie-dye pattern is a nod to the band’s iconic style, and the Jack-in-the-Box graphic symbolizes the unexpected surprises that fans associate with Grateful Dead’s April Fool’s Day events.

Fantastic! This is the best quality April Fool’s Day 1993 shirt I’ve found, even though it was cheaper than two others I bought on eBay. I’m not concerned about its collectible value. I have wonderful memories associated with it.
