The Grateful Dead 1993 Chinese New Year celebration, themed “Year of the Rooster,” took place over three nights at the Oakland-Alameda County Coliseum from January 24 to 26, 1993. This event was part of the band’s tradition of celebrating the Chinese New Year with special performances, often featuring unique elements and guest artists.
The final night on January 26, 1993, was particularly memorable due to the appearance of Carlos Santana, who joined the band for the second set. The evening was marked by a “Dragon Parade” that moved through the crowd during the “Drums” segment, adding to the festive atmosphere. Santana contributed to the post-“Drumz” portion of the set, including a notable solo during “Stella Blue,” and also played on “Turn On Your Love Light” and the encore, “Gloria”.
The event included a performance by a troupe of Chinese acrobats, whose impressive and joyful act added to the cultural celebration, making the experience even more unforgettable for those in attendance.
This concert series is remembered not only for its unique celebrations but also for its symbolic connection between the Grateful Dead’s music and Chinese New Year traditions.
